Road Pricing For Congestion Management in Jakarta

It is pathetic to know that Jakarta is still trapped in the transportation problems after any kind of solutions prove insignificant implementation in overcoming the congestion problems. The government has built bus way, regulated 3 in 1 rules, even built another high way as the attempts to bring Jakarta out from traffic jam problem. This problem is definitely harmful for three aspects: social, economy and environment.

Until now, many problems have come up because of the uncontrollable congestion. People waste money for gasoline uselessly more than 5 billions every day. Then they still have to face another problem like being late to go to the office, late for the meeting, car accident risk, etc.

To solve the congestion, several countries are successful in handling it by applying the road pricing. It is a travel demand  management by which we can control even force the society to leave an unnecessary trip which uses a private transportation and then encourage them to preferably use the public transportation.

With the road price, we charge the people who drives passing the crucial streets of traffic jam in particular time. We aim to make them aware of their contribution which has a role to cause the environmental problem, messy traffic and which harms those who do not use the private transportation.  By implementing this idea, we will be able to reduce traffic jam, decrease the pollution, balance the vehicle population in the streets and also get another income as a modal to improve the public facilities.

However, the government cannot apply this policy unless the quality of infrastructure, the traffic rules are guaranteed very well. This policy should synergize with the other policy such the law enforcement, etc.
