USING ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Communication is the way we associate to keep our existence as human. Only if we are able to talk correctly to our neighbors orally or in written will we be acknowledged as their element. We use language to deliver any idea in our mind to communicate with others. People all over the world use their language to communicate. Today’s famous languages used are English, France, and Mandarin. They become well-known due to the usage as daily speaking in many countries. Then, having ability in speaking both Arabic and English is very important as international language to show that we are a civilized nation. In addition, understanding English language will help us to increase our knowledge since many references are written in both. However, English is the most common used by nearly 80% people over the world oral or written. Therefore, we as Indonesian people have to understand English language to have an interaction with other foreigners and get job easily, and understand any sources written in English.

Speaking in English language will increase the tendency of having a good relation one another. We interact with other people not only with our body language but also with our language orally, for example to say hello or even make a little discussion. Indonesia. Now that most of Asian people are speaking English almost in their entire communication. It will be so disgraceful that Indonesian, the most populated citizen located in South East Asia, cannot speak in English. In fact, those Asian countries which speak English have a better relationship such as Brunai Darussalam, Singapore, Malaysia, etc. According to ASIAN news paper on July 2002,”Today, almost all Asian countries use English as second language and affects their citizen to be more familiar and respectful one another.” Actually, not only Asia use English as the second language but also other countries in Australia, Europe, and America used English in communication. Those countries often invite Indonesia to have educational program together, such as student exchange, which shows their attention and respect to other countries including Indonesia. So, having ability in speaking English is really helpful to have further relation with foreigners.

In addition to be able to communicate easily, another benefit of English is that many of our companies require English proficiency skill to be accepted. Nowadays, to be a bank secretary we must have English ability, either speaking or writing. Other positions that require English skills are manager, accountant, public officer, so on and so forth. Usually, to know the applicant’s English skills, the companies hold an English interview preceded by English written test. English is expected in most companies to develop their role in economic side. They do believe that the employee having good English skills will bring much beneficial, for example in getting foreign investor. Since many of Indonesia investors are American and Australian, English helps us to communicate with them. The investor will never want to co-operate the company without good relation. Absolutely, both first impression and public relation skills are needed to interest the investors. Those investors may be attracted if we understand what they are speaking, knowing their destination, and servicing with a very good notion.  There is no other choices but having English skills to enter to the position we want.

In case of Indonesian people have already known English, it will give them more knowledge easily. Most of our references right now, such as journals, books, researches, literary works, and magazines, are coming from United stated, Australia, and Greek which are written in English. What Indonesian people do is translating those books into Indonesian language to make our learners understand easier. Then, we can directly read the original book and we don’t have to read the translation one if understand English. Of course, the understanding of reading the translated and original may be different. It depends on our interference and background knowledge. More books we read more knowledge we get. In this case, nearly all sources are written in English, especially scientific books. Knowing English language is a must to understand and increase our knowledge.

After all, having ability in speaking and writing English with us are very useful in our life. These help us to have an interface with other foreigners without much difficulty, help us in getting a job for many companies require English as the most considered aspect, and give us, especially a science student due to the fact that many books written in English, more knowledge. Indeed, we will face a better future by having English skills
